EATING on holiday can be an expensive business, with just a kettle and a pricey mini bar in a hotel room guests are forced to spend wads of cash on restaurant meals.

But one man from Yorkshire reckons he has found the solution – cooking a slap-up meal using the hotel iron.

Former restaurateur Nick O’Neill travels regularly and he usually eats his meals in his hotel room, after cooking the grub on the iron.

To keep it clean, the 50-year-old covers the hot metal in tin foil before placing his raw goods on to cook.

He has cooked everything from sausages and bacon to fish with the electrical appliance.

In addition to the iron, he uses the kettle to cook up rice and the trouser press to keep food warm.

Nick told MailOnline: “’I don’t want to pay expensive room service bills, and I don’t always want to go out for a meal, so I look at the room service menu, and think: can I make that in the room?

“A burger, even in the Lakes, is going to cost you more than a tenner. But my burger costs £1 for the meat. The meals cost just two quid.

“If I was staying in hotels for a week, I’d easily save £200 on meals.”

In the last ten years, he has made food including a “pizza” made using puff pastry; chicken kebabs and burgers on hotel irons.

Nick is now hoping to share his knowledge with others by securing a cookbook deal and a TV show.

He added:  “It’s fun, it’s silly, it’s quirky – but most of all it’s practical, I think even if I was a millionaire, I would still cook this way.”
