Sainsbury’s, Morrisons and Tesco have joined Asda in cutting the cost of petrol and diesel by up to 2p per litre.
Asda was the first of the big four supermarket to announce a price cut, in a fresh pump price war.
Asda said that cheaper fuel prices are being driven by a dip in wholesale prices, as oil hits $48 a barrel.
The supermarket promised that drivers would not pay more than 111.7p per litre for fuel at any of its 308 filling stations from tomorrow.
Sainsbury’s, Tesco and Morrisons then followed, by announcing a similar drop in diesel and unleaded petrol prices by up to 2p per litre.
Although, Tesco said that the lower fuel price will be available at its filling stations from this afternoon, while Sainsbury’s and Morrisons shopper will have to wait until tomorrow.
A combination of a lower oil price and rise in the value of the pound has made it cheaper for retailers to buy fuel.
In the past, supermarket’s have been critisied for not passing on these savings to motorists.
RAC fuel spokesman Simon Williams said: “This is excellent news for motorists. But it’s particularly good to see a major supermarket reducing the price of diesel in line with petrol as the wholesale costs of both fuels are currently very similar.

“Motorists should now be able to fill up for less and make the most of the weekend’s fantastic summer weather.”
Luke Bosdet, AA spokesman said: “UK average petrol prices have been stuck at around 116.5p a litre for the past six weeks and drivers were wondering when they were going to see the benefit of lower oil prices. Asda’s move will hopefully break the logjam.
“Asda and some of the other supermarkets have been trading at 4p below the national average for some time, making them the go-to places for cheaper fuel.”
Three ways to cut down your fuel costs
- Make your car more fuel-efficient. You can do this by keeping your tyres inflated, taking the roof rack off, emptying your car of clutter and turning off your air con when driving at lower speeds.
- Find the cheapest fuel prices. Use PetrolPrices.com. All you need to do is enter in your postcode and tell it how far you want to travel (up to 20 miles)
- Drive more efficiently. Some ways to do this, include:
- Accelerate gradually without over-revving
- Always drive on the highest possible gear
- If you can, allow your car to slow down naturally as your brake is a money burner
- Re-starting your car is expensive, if you can keep moving
