Now, however good you are at bagging a bargain, there’s almost always an extra saving to be made. According to consumer site Resolver.co.uk, 60 per cent of Scots who haggle in big High Street name stores get more money off, rising to 97 per cent in smaller independent stores.

But not everyone is comfortable trying to wangle a bigger discount, so we’ve teamed up with James Walker, founder of Resolver.co.uk. to reveals the seven tips which really work.

1. Target the right person – Big department stores and brand boutiques often have a ‘no discount’ policy – and it’s pre-programmed in to the tills. Don’t waste time talking to sales assistants, instead look for the floor managers and ask them.
2. Be concise – Explain why you want the discount but don’t waffle on. Say you’re pushed for time and you need a quick decision, or you’re only around that day.

3.    Word it well – Ask ‘closed’ questions. “You can give me ten per cent off that?” is harder to say no to than “can you give me a discount?” Then pause after you’ve asked. It might feel uncomfortable, but it’s much harder for the other person to say something that isn’t positive.

4. Be a shop tease – If you’re after a big discount, be enthusiastic about the product when you first go in, then explain you need to think about it. Shop assistants know that you’re less likely to make a purchase when you’re out of the shop and weighing things up.

5. Don’t be afraid to walk away – Point out you’ve seen a reduction in a rival shop and if they turn you down, politely say you’re disappointed but you understand. Come back 15 minutes later and browse. The assistant may have spoken to a senior colleague and could offer you a deal.
6. Go independent – You’re far more likely to get a discount from an independent shop or one that provides goods from a range of brands. Point out similar shops and mention they’ve offered to meet your ideal price.

7.    Don’t give up at the first hurdle: Even if you’re turned down, try again somewhere else. You’re unlikely to see the sales assistant again so don’t be embarrassed.
