Now, a worrying new study this week from Consumer Intelligence has revealed one in six adults are relying on credit cards simply to get by each month.
Unsecured debt is at the highest level since the 2008 financial crisis, with 42 per cent of households admitting they are ‘worried’ by their level of debt.
As a result one in three customers are juggling three or more credit cards, with 11 per cent maxed out on one or more cards.
So if the plastic is no longer fantastic for you, how do you dig yourself out of debt?
We’ve teamed up with Ian Hughes, Chief Executive of Consumer Intelligence, to get you help.
1. Get on top of your debts by working out how exactly much you owe and what you are paying each month. It maybe scary but it’s essential.
2. Average credit card debts can be as much as 18% so look for less expensive alternatives if you can
3. Cut your monthly payments by transferring your debts to a zero per cent card – the longest deals last for up to 43 months
4. Consider switching all your debts to one personal loan – that means you have just one payment a month and fixed time to pay your debts off in and the interest rate will be lower
5. If you’ve got a mortgage and equity in your home consider adding to your mortgage to clear your debt.
6. Always try to pay more than the minimum amount on your cards each month – the more you pay the quicker you cut your debts. Even a few quid a month extra is a start.
7. Get advice – National Debtline is free on 0808 808 4000 or use the webchat athttps://www.nationaldebtline.org/
