TALKTALK is to push up bill for hundreds of thousands of broadband and mobile phone customers from August 1 this year.

Some broadband customers will see their bills go up by up to £21 a year.

It is also increasing costs for some pay monthly mobile phone customers by up to £30 a year.

The telecoms firm said it is in the process of contacting customers who are affected by the increase (and not on a new fixed low price plan) via letter or email.

Customers who have signed up or renewed their broadband with TalkTalk since October last year will be on a fixed price plan and are not affected by the increases.

It is also making some changes to its call rates for telephone customers.

From August 1 customers will pay 13.5p per minute for calls to UK landlines and mobiles, up from 12.5p per minute.

Call connection charges are going up to 20p per call, from 18p and premium call charges will cost 10.5p per minute – up from 7.5p.

The firm said that a “large proportion” of customers would be unaffected by the call increases as they have all-inclusive packages.

In October last year, TalkTalk became on of the first providers to scrap separate line rental charges by introducing a single monthly cost for broadband customers.

It was part of new rules set by the Advertising Standards Authority which require networks, including Sky and BT, to use just one price when advertising to customers.

In the same month, TalkTalk was handed a record £400,000 fine for allowing cyber-hackers to access customer data.

Around 157,000 customers were affected by the hack, which saw more than 15,600 bank account numbers and sort codes stolen.

A spokesperson from TalkTalk said: “Changing our packages and pricing is never a decision we take lightly but we’re committed to bringing our customers the best value products and services.

“We’ve been investing millions in improving our unlimited broadband network, making our TV service faster and simpler to use, and introducing industry-leading security services and calling features which we provide as standard.

“Whilst making such improvements mean that some prices will increase, we’re determined to put our customers first and TalkTalk customers continue to make a saving of up to £333 in comparison to BT, Sky and Virgin Media.”

HOW TO BEAT THE HIKES

IT is possible to take action now to avoid these price rise, here's what to try:

If you’re a broadband or mobile phone customer affected by the price hikes and still within the minimum term of your contract then you can leave without paying an exit fee.

You’ll need to tell TalkTalk within 30 days of recieving official notification of the price changes – otherwise, you’ll pay a termination fee.

If you’re unhappy with the hikes to telephone charges but want to stay with TalkTalk then it’s worth calling up and haggling.

Tell them you want to leave and see if they make you a better offer.
