Secondly, if you have a car, check how much you’re paying for your insurance.
New research from research firm Consumer Intelligence reveals motor insurance bills have soared by five times the rate of inflation after a government increase in personal injury payouts combined with a rise in tax rates.
The average driver now forks out £666 in premiums and young drivers aged under 24 facing an eye-watering £1,202 bill.
But switching insurers takes less than 30 minutes and saves an average of £63 on your premium – and there are other ways to cut your car insurance costs too.
So we’ve teamed up with Consumer Intelligence to bring you the nine essential insurance-busting tips.
1) New rules mean your insurer has to tell you what paid last year, so you can see if there’s a price rise
2) Haggle with your insurer. They won’t want to lose your custom so many reduce your premium.
3) Shop around – always compare the price you’re being offered and use multiple price comparison websites as they show different deals.
4) Switching saves money – the average driver saves £63 a year by moving at the end of the year.
5) Consider black box or telematics polices – they reward good driving and keep your costs down and offer the best deals to younger drivers. They can even help older drivers.
6) No claims bonuses cut your costs so make sure your insurer knows about it.
7) Take a higher excess – if you are happy to pay more of any claims it cuts your cost. Be realistic though.
8) Some insurers offer discounts for alarms and tracking devices – but make sure it’s approved by your insurer.
9) Cut your mileage – the less you drive the lower you will pay.
