It’s Glastonbury weekend, but new research suggests the average cost of partying at a summer music show has reached a record £400.

Darren Williams from penny-pinching site Promotionalcodes.org.uk said: “By budgeting a little here and there, you can end up saving a bit of money.”

Top ten money-saving festival tips:

1) Set a budget and stick to it. Only take cash and don’t take your bank card, as it costs to withdraw money at festivals.

2) Wear a bum bag or a cross-shoulder bag. Keep valuables on you at all times.

3) Don’t buy a programme. Forward plan and list the artists you want to see before you go or download the festival’s app.

4) Organise travel in advance. The earlier you book, the cheaper it will be. Driving? Car share to cut costs.

5) Research rules on alcohol. Check before and bring the maximum but not too much or it could be confiscated.

6) Try volunteering. Festivals need people to dish out wristbands, pick litter, sell programmes or direct traffic. In return you can get a free ticket, and some offer accommodation and food.

7) Recycle. At some festivals, taking back your drinks cup can earn you around 10p.

8) Bring your own food. Take breakfast bars, sandwiches and snacks. Only buy one big meal a day.

9) Dig out your old phone. It won’t matter if you lose it and the batteries will last.

10) Don’t waste money on anything expensive. Festivals aren’t about luxury, so don’t buy gear which may end up in the mud.
